Bio:
I believe my love for music
started about 1977-78, around the time when the movie “Saturday Night Fever”
first came out. I remember going to see
the movie with my oldest sister, and being so astounded by the moves of John
Travolta’s character, Tony Manero, and the sounds of The Bee Gees and the whole
spectacle of the Disco Era. I remember
emulating Tony’s moves from the movie and trying to be as suave as he was. To look at all that now is laughable at best,
but I believe that to be my musical point of origin. Try to keep the giggling to a minimum, folks!
My next big musical venture
would have to be what I affectionaly refer
to as the “original” Breakdance Era (not the wannabe rehashing we are
experiencing now). I was just starting
High School at the time, and my friends and I would go upstairs from my mom’s
house and practice our routines and our ”Poppin’ and Locking”, “Pennies”, our
“Helicopters” and our “1990s” (if you are old school, like me, these terms will
strike a memory chord). I belonged to a
crew called the CTA breakers at first.
We were part of CTA (Creative Team Artists) who were primarily a
graffiti crew who wanted to expand to a full hip-hop crew (Graffiti, Breakers,
and D.J.’s). This is where I gained all
my breakdance and some d.j. experience and also started me off as a graffiti
artist as well. I then started a crew
with my cousins called the Floor Masters.
At the time we were pretty well known in the Chicago Breaking scene,
winning many city competitions and trophies.
For a brief period I joined the Chicago faction of the Street Masters
Crew from NYC, but that was short lived.
After Breaking died down, I
joined a dance crew called Imported Taste.
A lot of you old schoolers out there remember the club Jenals, and the
Rainbo roller rink parties! Well these
were but a few of the places we performed, along with other dance crews like
the Culitos and A.K.A. and Contact.
During that time, is when my partner Eddie “Atomico” and I fine tuned
our skills in the music scene. Hanging
out in Eddie’s basement, mixing music for the dance crews and and practicing my
dancing, are some of my fondest memories.
With the emergence of the
Chicago House scene, that all but sealed
our fate in the D.J. business. We were
hooked on the music at this point. It
was something new and addictive. The
bass and the lyrics were so fresh and innovative. And the best part was we felt it was
OURS! Chicago is the home of House, and
we being Chicagoans, adopted this as OUR music.
It defined our lives. There isn’t
one House song I can listen to and NOT associate some awesome event or
occurrence of my past to it! And here on
Chi-Town Underground, we are committed to bring you the same fond memories, the
same music you listened to, and the same quality-style mixes you crave! So we urge you as OUR people, OUR House
crowd, to tune in and TURN IT UP!!! And
if you like it, hate it, or rate it in between, PLEASE feel free to drop us a
line and we will gladly appreciate your feedback and try to improve the
groove! Peace!
B-Boy Berto!!!
